Google announced Android Wear on March 18, 2014 as a developer preview,
naming Motorola, Samsung, LG, HTC, and Asus as launch partners. The platform was fully
unveiled at Google I/O on June 25, 2014, alongside the first two devices to actually ship:
the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live, both available
within days. Motorola's circular Moto 360 followed a couple of months
later, on September 5, 2014, and became the era's most recognizable design.
At launch, an Android Wear watch could mirror notifications from a paired Android phone,
show Google Now cards (weather, commute time, calendar events), and respond to "OK Google"
voice actions for things like setting reminders or sending texts. It could not run
standalone apps or install anything from an on-watch app store — every "app" was
really a companion component mirrored from an app already installed on your phone, and
the watch was largely useless without that phone nearby. The first wave of Wear-compatible
phone apps arrived on the Play Store on June 30, 2014.
Buying today?
These original 2014 devices are collector pieces, not usable smartwatches
today. They stopped receiving software updates roughly a decade ago, can't install
anything resembling a modern app, and any battery in one is a decade old. Skip them
entirely, even if you find one cheap.

An update announced April 20, 2015 (rolling out as Android Wear 5.1.1
over the following months) added wrist gestures — a flick of the wrist would scroll
through cards without touching the screen — along with Wi-Fi connectivity, so a watch
could stay connected to notifications even out of Bluetooth range of the phone, as long as
both were on a network with internet access. It also extended always-on ambient screens to
third-party apps (previously limited to watch faces), added a swipe-left app launcher, and
introduced quick emoji replies. Not every device got the full update: the original
LG G Watch, LG G Watch R, and Asus ZenWatch
lacked a Wi-Fi radio, so that piece of the update simply didn't apply to them.
On August 31, 2015, Google brought Android Wear to the iPhone for the
first time, requiring iOS 8.2 or later on an iPhone 5 or newer. iOS support launched with
the LG Watch Urbane and was quickly extended to two new watches that debuted around IFA
Berlin in September 2015: the second-generation Moto 360 and the
Huawei Watch. The iPhone experience was noticeably reduced compared to
pairing with an Android phone — "OK Google" voice commands, for example, weren't
available.
Buying today?
Devices from this era still couldn't run standalone apps and are long past
any software support — interesting for understanding the platform's trajectory, not
for buying.

Android Wear 2.0 released on February 10, 2017, after slipping from an
originally planned late-2016 launch. It shipped alongside two Google-built devices, the
LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style, and brought the first
complete redesign of the platform: a new UI built around a Google-designed complication
system for watch faces, Google Assistant replacing Google Now, and — for the first
time — genuinely standalone apps that could run, and be installed
from an on-watch Play Store, without a phone connected at all. Android Pay (later renamed
Google Pay) support meant a Wear OS watch could make contactless payments on its own.
The LG Watch Sport was the flagship expression of this phone-independence: built-in GPS,
LTE, NFC, and a heart-rate sensor, plus a rotating side button used for scrolling and
navigation. The Watch Style was the simpler, smaller sibling without cellular connectivity.
Existing devices from the Android Wear 1.x era, including the Moto 360 (2nd gen) and Huawei
Watch, received 2.0 as a software update over the following months rather than requiring
new hardware.
Buying today?
This is the version where a Wear OS watch first became usable on its own
— running apps, paying for coffee, and getting directions without your phone in your
pocket. Everything before this update was fundamentally a phone accessory.

On March 15, 2018, timed to coincide with the Baselworld watch and
jewelry trade show, Google renamed Android Wear to "Wear OS by Google."
Google's stated reason was to broaden the platform's appeal beyond Android phone owners:
the company said roughly one in three people who bought a new Android Wear watch in 2017
already owned an iPhone, and an "Android"-branded product undersold a platform that had
supported iOS since 2015. This was purely a naming and branding change — no feature
overhaul shipped alongside it.
The substantive updates came in the following months and years, always identified by date
or internal codename rather than a version number. A November 2018 update
(built on Android 9 Pie) revised Battery Saver mode to drop to a time-only display below 10%
charge and enter deep sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity, and added "Smart App Resume" so
apps reopened where you left off. Through 2018 and 2019, Google rolled out
Tiles — swipeable glanceable cards for weather, calendar, heart rate,
and fitness goals — alongside a redesigned Google Fit with dedicated workout tiles and
eventually a lower-power GPS mode.
Hardware caught up too: Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip launched in
September 2018 promising four to twelve hours of extra battery life plus a low-power
"Traditional Watch Mode" that could last roughly a week showing just the time and step
count. Fossil's Gen 4 watches were among the first to use it, and Mobvoi's
TicWatch Pro paired it with a distinctive dual-layer LCD-under-OLED
display that could stretch battery life to around a month in basic watch mode.
Buying today?
Every device from this whole "Wear OS" branding era (2018–2020) is
still built on the same underlying Android Wear 2.x app platform as the original 2017
release. Practically all of them are permanently capped there — only three specific
2020-era TicWatch models ever received a path to the next major version, covered next.

At Google I/O on May 18, 2021, Google and Samsung announced they were
merging Wear OS with Samsung's own Tizen smartwatch platform into a single, unified
platform — combining Samsung's power-efficiency and UI engineering (honed over years
of Tizen-based Galaxy Watches) with Google's app ecosystem and services. The platform
remained open to any manufacturer, who could still layer a custom interface on top. Its
official name, Wear OS 3, was confirmed a few months later on July 22,
2021 — the first time Google had used a version number for a Wear OS release.
Wear OS 3 is built on Android 11 and requires at minimum a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100
chipset. Google claimed up to 30% faster app performance on the latest chipsets plus
improved battery life (a marketing figure that hasn't been independently verified). On
Samsung devices, Wear OS 3 runs underneath Samsung's own One UI Watch
interface; other manufacturers ship a build closer to stock Wear OS 3.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic,
released August 27, 2021, were the first Wear OS 3 devices — shipping natively with
Wear OS 3 and One UI Watch 3 from day one, not with Tizen, despite that being a common
misconception. Other manufacturers took much longer: Fossil's Gen 6 watches
didn't receive their Wear OS 3 update until October 17, 2022 (and initially without Google
Assistant), and Mobvoi's promised mid-2022 update for the TicWatch Pro 3
and TicWatch E3 was delayed repeatedly, finally arriving in December 2023
— more than two years after Wear OS 3 launched.
Buying today?
This is the most important cutoff on this whole page. Only three pre-2021
devices ever became eligible for Wear OS 3 — the TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, TicWatch Pro 3
LTE, and TicWatch E3, all built on the Snapdragon Wear 4100 chip. Every other Wear OS device
released before 2021 is permanently stuck on the older Wear OS 2.x app platform and can
never run Wear OS 3 or anything after it. If you're looking at a used or discounted
pre-2021 Wear OS watch, budget accordingly: it's frozen in place, software-wise.

Google shipped its first first-party Wear OS hardware, the original Google Pixel
Watch, on October 13, 2022, starting at $349. It paired a domed AMOLED display
with the same Samsung Exynos 9110 chipset used in the Galaxy Watch4, and leaned heavily on
Fitbit (acquired by Google in 2021) rather than Google Fit for its health experience —
a "Today" feed, Active Zone Minutes, and Sleep Score all came from the Fitbit app. It
shipped on an interim build often labeled "Wear OS 3.5", a real
Google-used version label rather than just shorthand, later applied to updates for the
Galaxy Watch5/Watch5 Pro and Fossil Gen 6 as well.
At Google I/O on May 10, 2023, Google announced Wear OS 4,
built on Android 13. Its headline feature was cloud backup and restore: for the first time,
you could transfer your apps, watch faces, and settings to a new watch, or restore them
after a reset, without needing your original phone. It also synced app permissions
automatically during setup, improved general battery and performance, sped up on-watch
text-to-speech, and introduced Watch Face Format — a declarative, no-code system for
building watch faces.
Wear OS 4 debuted on the Samsung Galaxy Watch6 and
Watch6 Classic (released August 11, 2023, running One UI Watch 5 out of
the box) and the Google Pixel Watch 2 (released October 12, 2023), which
added a new Snapdragon SW5100 chip, a continuous electrodermal activity (cEDA) stress
sensor, a skin-temperature sensor, and switched to a lighter aluminum chassis. Not every
device kept pace: Mobvoi's TicWatch Pro 5, a brand-new watch released in
2023, shipped on the older Wear OS 3.5 and wasn't updated to Wear OS 4 until
September 2024.
Buying today?
This is when Google's own hardware became a mainline recommendation, not
just Samsung's. Also worth noting for buyers: smaller-brand OEM devices like TicWatch often
ship on an older Wear OS build than their release date would suggest, and can lag a year or
more behind Google and Samsung on major version updates.

Wear OS 5, announced at Google I/O in May 2024 and built on Android 14, was framed almost
entirely around efficiency. Google's headline claim was up to 20% less power consumption
than Wear OS 4 specifically when tracking an outdoor marathon with GPS and heart-rate
sensing active, with a broader claim that any workout sampling both heart rate and GPS
should run more efficiently in general. It also introduced a new grid-based app launcher,
let the Pixel Camera app use the watch as a remote viewfinder, and extended Watch Face
Format with new capabilities for developers.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra
launched with Wear OS 5 on July 10, 2024, followed by the Google Pixel Watch 3
on August 13, 2024. Google also backported Wear OS 5 to a wide range of existing
2021-and-later hardware, including the Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, and Watch6 families, both
generations of Pixel Watch, and the OnePlus Watch 2 and 2R.
Buying today?
The Wear OS 5 backport list is a good practical illustration of the 2021
cutoff described above: it reached plenty of 2021–2023 devices, but nothing built on
the pre-2021 Wear OS 2.x platform.

Announced at Google I/O in May 2025, Wear OS 6 introduced Material 3 Expressive
— Google's broader, more personalized redesign language, adapted here for circular
watch displays. It brought bolder, mood-adapting color and motion, a cleaner three-slot
layout that hugs curved screen edges, dynamic theming, and redesigned buttons, progress
indicators, and scroll indicators built specifically for round watch faces. Google claimed
up to a 10% battery-life improvement over Wear OS 5.
New hardware carried it out of the gate: Samsung's Galaxy Watch8,
Watch8 Classic, and Watch Ultra (announced July 9, 2025,
released July 25, 2025, running Wear OS 6 as "One UI 8 Watch") and the
Google Pixel Watch 4 (announced August 20, 2025, released October 9, 2025).
Pixel Watch 4 introduced a new domed "Actua 360" display with 15% smaller bezels than its
predecessor, the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip, and came with a three-year update commitment
running through 2028. Google also rolled Wear OS 6 back to the existing Pixel Watch 2 and
Pixel Watch 3 starting around December 2025.
Buying today?
Pixel Watch 4's three-year update pledge (through 2028) is a useful,
concrete benchmark: if you're buying a current flagship new, that's roughly the window of
major-version updates you should expect from Google's own hardware.

Wear OS 7 and where the platform stands today

Wear OS 7 was announced at Google I/O 2026 and began rolling out to existing Pixel
Watches on June 16, 2026. It adds Live Updates — persistent,
glanceable cards for things like live sports scores, workout progress, or a food delivery's
arrival time — a "Create My Widget" feature that uses Google's Gemini to build a
custom dashboard tile from a plain-language description, refreshed visual details Google
calls "Neural Expressive," and roughly another 10% battery-life improvement on top of Wear
OS 6.
The bigger platform shift running alongside Wear OS 7 is Google's Gemini
assistant replacing Google Assistant on the wrist, a transition that continued through 2026
and requires at least Wear OS 4. A dedicated Gemini overlay interface, which keeps your
watch face visible while you interact with Gemini instead of covering it, rolled out in
August 2026. The Google Pixel Watch 5, announced August 12, 2026 and
released August 20, 2026 starting at $399, is the first device to ship with Wear OS 7 and
Gemini Intelligence out of the box, and adds dual-frequency GPS and satellite SOS alongside
the same Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip used in Pixel Watch 4.
Separately, Google has required all new and updated Wear OS apps on Google Play to be
64-bit as of September 15, 2026 — a developer-facing change, but a clear signal that
the platform is continuing to phase out its oldest, 32-bit-era software foundations.
Buying today?
As of this writing (September 2026), Wear OS 7 on the Pixel Watch 5 is the
newest thing you can buy, and Gemini Intelligence features are still in staged rollout
rather than uniformly available across every supported device. This section covers
material from very recent months; treat exact rollout dates and percentage claims as the
kind of detail Google can and does revise after the fact, and expect this page to need
updating again once the next major version or device lands.
